Moving at short notice: the week-to-go playbook

The first hour: lock in the three essentials

With a week to go you do not have a planning problem, you have a sequencing problem. Three things get sorted before anything else, in this order:

1. The mover. Ring firms that answer. A company with a 24-hour line and a same-day quote process can confirm in hours; a firm that books surveys for next Tuesday cannot help you. Have your details ready: rooms, big items, both postcodes, parking at each end, and your dates. A video walkthrough on your phone replaces the in-person survey and takes ten minutes; one of our customers videoed her whole property because she lived too far away to meet us, and the quote came back the same day.
2. The date trade-offs. If your date can flex even one day either side, say so. A Tuesday or a Wednesday is far easier to staff at short notice than a Friday, and that flexibility is your strongest card.

What short notice actually changes (and what it does not)

Short notice narrows your choices; it should not change the standards. You still want a written quote, named insurance and a real survey, even a video one. What genuinely changes is availability. Fridays, month-ends and school holidays are booked weeks ahead, so a short-notice move lands more easily midweek and mid-month. Vehicle and crew depth matter too: a one-van firm with a full diary has nothing to offer you, however good they are. This is one of the few situations where a slightly bigger local fleet beats a single brilliant van.

Packing fast without packing badly

The full room-by-room method in our packing guide assumes weeks. Compressed to days, it becomes:

• Skip the sort. Decluttering is a luxury of the well-planned. Pack now, sort at the other end.
• Label by destination room only. Forget contents lists; "kitchen", "bed 2", "garage" on two sides and the top is enough to keep the unload sane.
• Bin bags for soft things, boxes for hard things. Clothes, bedding and towels travel happily in bags, and bags squash into van gaps that boxes cannot use.
• One fragile session. Do all the breakables in a single focused hour with proper paper, rather than wrapping a vase at midnight with a tea towel and hope.
• Or hand packing to the crew. A professional pack crew does a three-bedroom house in a day, which is exactly the day you do not have. On compressed timelines a packing service stops being a luxury and starts being the plan.

When storage gets you out of a corner

Half the short-notice calls we take are not really about speed, they are about a gap: the old place must be empty before the new one is ready. The answer is usually a removal into storage now and a second delivery when the keys exist. The Coleman family's chain wobbled exactly like that, and the fix was rearranging the load so the essentials came out first when the second leg finally ran. Protecting yourself when booking fast

Urgency is exactly when corners get cut, by movers and by customers. Two protections survive any timescale. First, insurance: the HomeOwners Alliance puts the question you must still ask as "Does your quote include insurance? What are the individual item thresholds and total loss limits?" Thirty seconds on the phone, and a legitimate firm answers without hesitating.

Second, payment protection. If a firm wants money up front, know what stands behind it. BAR members carry a specific safeguard, in the trade body's own words: "Where Members take money in advance of the move - which is standard industry practice - you are protected by BAR's Advanced Payment Guarantee." Booking a non-member at short notice (we are not members ourselves, as our choosing guide explains openly) is fine, but then pay by card rather than bank transfer, because card payments carry their own protection.

How we handle short-notice moves

The phone is answered 24 hours a day by Sean, who quotes the same day, usually within the hour. Video surveys replace home visits when the clock is against us, several vans mean a midweek slot can often be found inside the week, and the same crew that does our planned moves does the fast ones, to the same standard. The honest caveat: a Friday at month-end at 48 hours' notice is sometimes simply gone, and if we cannot do your date properly we will say so on the first call rather than waste your afternoon.
