Moving box calculator
What it does
Tell us your property size, how full your home is and any extras. In about ten seconds you'll see how many moving boxes you need by size, what size van to book, the packing materials to order, and when to start packing for your house move.
Why counts vary
Two homes with the same bedrooms can need very different numbers of boxes: a lean three-bed packs into around 45, a full one far more. We built this around real moves across the West Midlands, so it's a sensible starting point before your written quote.

What your results mean
- Small boxes
- Books, CDs, tins and anything heavy or dense, so no single box gets too heavy to lift safely.
- Medium boxes
- The everyday workhorse: general household items from cupboards, shelves and drawers.
- Large boxes
- Light but bulky things like bedding, pillows, cushions and lampshades.
- Wardrobe boxes
- Hanging clothes straight off the rail, on a built-in bar so they travel uncreased.
Van size: A guide from your estimated boxes, not a firm booking. We confirm the exact vehicle and crew when we survey or quote your move.

How many boxes do I need to move house?
It depends on the size of your home and how much you own. As a rough guide, a 2-bed home needs around 40 boxes and a 3-bed around 60, but a full home can need far more. The calculator gives you a tailored estimate in a few taps.
How accurate is the box calculator?
It is a guide based on typical homes, then adjusted for how full your place is and any extras like a garage or loft. Every home is different, so treat it as a sensible starting point. The firm answer comes with your written quote.
What size van will I need for my move?
The calculator suggests a likely van or move size from your estimated boxes, from a man and van for a small flat up to a larger lorry for a full house. We confirm the right vehicle and crew when we quote.
Does the calculator include packing materials?
Yes. Alongside the box count it estimates rough quantities of tape, packing paper and bubble wrap, so you can order roughly the right amount rather than guessing.
When should I start packing?
The calculator suggests a packing timeline based on how much you are moving. For most homes a few weeks is comfortable. Our free Moving Planner turns that into a week-by-week checklist.
Can Brewood Removals pack for me?
Yes. Our packing service covers everything from a few fragile items to a full home, with proper materials and careful labelling. Ask for it when you request your quote.
What size box should I use for heavy items like books?
Use small boxes for books, CDs, tins and anything dense, so no box gets too heavy to lift safely. Keep large boxes for light, bulky things like bedding and cushions, medium boxes for general household items, and wardrobe boxes for hanging clothes straight off the rail.
