Storage when moving house is usually a bridge, not a lifestyle: the completion dates do not line up, a chain wobbles, or the new place needs work before the furniture lands. Here is how removals storage actually works, what it protects you from, and what to check before your things go into anyone's container.
Nobody plans to live between two addresses, and yet storage jobs are a steady part of our week. The usual causes: a completion date slips while the chain's solicitors argue, a sale completes before the purchase does, a new-build misses its finish date, a renovation has to happen before furniture arrives, or a chain breaks entirely and the family moves into a rental while they re-house-hunt.
The common thread is that the moving-out date is fixed while the moving-in date floats. Storage converts that mismatch from a crisis into a cost line: everything is collected, kept safe, and delivered when the second date finally exists. A storage move is a normal removal with a pause in the middle. The crew packs and wraps exactly as they would for a same-day move, then everything is inventoried and loaded into secure containers, in our case with our storage partners at M54 Self Storage, just off the M54, where it stays sealed until the delivery leg. When your keys exist, the second crew visit delivers and unwraps at the new address.
Three details separate a good storage move from a stressful one: furniture is wrapped for storage (breathable covers on upholstery, nothing damp going in), the inventory is written down rather than remembered, and the load is planned so things you might need mid-gap sit at the front of the container rather than behind the wardrobes.

The honest summary: if you need to visit your things weekly, self storage wins. If the entire house is bridging a gap and you mostly want it safe and untouched, container storage involves less handling, and every extra handling is an extra chance of damage. Plenty of moves use both: the household into containers, one self-storage unit for the things you cannot predict needing.
Storage is less regulated than people assume. The Self Storage Association UK says it plainly in its guidance on selecting a provider: "Self storage in the UK is a self-regulated industry so you need to ensure there is a comprehensive contract between you and your self storage provider." Its membership badge is one useful signal, since "All Self Storage Association UK (SSA UK) members must meet this standard to maintain their membership." The delivery leg is where storage moves are won. Two habits make it painless. First, load the container in reverse-need order: beds, kettle box and the washing machine at the front, the garage boxes at the back. Second, keep a "gap bag" out of storage entirely, with the season's clothes, paperwork, chargers and anything with sentimental gravity, because the one guarantee about a gap is that it lasts longer than the estimate.
When the new date lands, the delivery books like a normal move: crew, van, written time. Everything arrives wrapped as it left, the inventory gets ticked off, and the move finishes in the right rooms per the moving day guide. For a whole household bridging a gap, container storage usually wins: the crew loads it once and nothing is handled again until delivery. Self storage suits part-loads you need regular access to. Many moves sensibly use a container for the house and one small unit for the unpredictables.
Only if a storage policy says so; goods-in-transit cover ends when the container closes. Ask whose insurance applies while stored, to what value, and get it in writing. The Self Storage Association UK's advice is blunt: if it is worth storing, it is worth insuring.

Weeks and months are routine, and longer is fine when the goods went in dry and properly wrapped. Upholstery wants breathable covers rather than sealed plastic, and anything damp should never go in at all, because damp is the one thing a sealed container cannot fix.
