Piano removals

Pianos moved like they're priceless. Because yours is.

Piano removals across the West Midlands with the right equipment and a planned route through the property before anything is lifted. Uprights, baby grands and digitals, moved by people who do not treat them as just heavy furniture.

  • Uprights and grandsLegs off, edges padded, controlled lifts. Each type has its method.
  • Route planned firstWe walk the path before the piano does. Steps and lips get ramps, not luck.
  • Proper straps and trolleysPiano-specific kit, not two blokes and optimism.

How professional piano movers actually do it

Every piano move starts with the route: doorways measured, steps counted, tight turns identified before lifting day. In April 2025 a Solihull baby grand looked straightforward until the final doorway disagreed, so the legs came off, every edge got padding, and it went through the wider rear entrance in a controlled lift to its new Coventry home. The owner's review: calm, skilled and clearly experienced with pianos.

Uprights ride strapped to piano trolleys, and awkward steps get the ramp reset rather than forced. A McCarthy family upright in June 2025 met a step with a nasty lip that caught the trolley. We paused, reset, and took it slowly. Shortbread was supplied. Nobody rushed.

Family pianos, digital pianos, the lot

Most pianos we move are not concert instruments; they are the one your gran played, which makes them worth more, not less. The Lloyd upright had been in the family for decades when we brought it home to Brewood in January 2025. Their son played one triumphant note when it landed. That is the job done right.

Digital pianos and stands travel dismantled and wrapped, with cables in a labelled bag, because easy-to-scratch beats heavy as the actual challenge. If your move includes a piano alongside a full house, tell us at quote stage and we will plan it into the load properly.

Upright, grand or digital: what each piano needs

Each type of piano needs a different method, and we bring the kit and the crew to match:

Whatever the type, expect to book a tuner a few weeks after the move. The change of room and humidity nudges any piano out of tune, even after a faultless lift.

Upright

  • Strapped to a piano trolley
  • Two movers or more
  • Route walked and measured first
  • Often 200 to 300kg, weight high up

Grand

  • Legs and pedal lyre removed
  • Body padded, wrapped, on its side
  • Carried on a padded piano board
  • Reassembled and positioned at the other end

Digital

  • Comes apart and gets wrapped
  • Lighter, but easy to scratch
  • Cables travel in a labelled bag
  • Set up again at the new place

Four recent piano moves, exactly as they happened

January 2025

Penn Road, Wolverhampton WV4Church Street, Brewood ST19

upright piano

The piano had been in the family for decades and the client was understandably nervous. Tight turns, proper straps and a slow, careful load got it moved without drama. Their son played one triumphant note when it was in place.

"You treated it like it was priceless, which to us it is."
The Lloyd family

April 2025

Warwick Road, Solihull B91Kenilworth Road, Coventry CV3

baby grand piano

The access looked generous until the final doorway decided to be awkward. The team removed the legs, protected every edge and used a controlled lift through the wider rear entrance.

"Calm, skilled and clearly experienced with pianos, not just heavy furniture."
The Stevens family

June 2025

Lichfield Street, Walsall WS1Newport Road, Stafford ST16

upright piano

A step at the old property had a nasty little lip that caught the trolley. The team paused, reset the ramp and moved it slowly rather than forcing it. The client supplied excellent shortbread, which was mentioned more than once.

"They took their time where it mattered."
The McCarthy family

September 2025

Bearwood High Street, Sandwell B66High Street, Dudley DY1

digital piano and stand

Not the heaviest piano job, but the stand and pedals were awkward and easy to scratch. The team wrapped the separate sections and kept the cables together in a labelled bag.

"It arrived cleaner than when it left. I am not asking questions."
The Evans family

Frequently asked questions

How much does piano removal cost?

It depends on the piano type, the access at both ends and the distance, so we quote each piano move individually. Send photos of the piano and both doorways with your enquiry and the quote comes back faster and firmer.

Can you move an upright piano upstairs?

Usually yes, with the route walked first. Stairs, landings and turns decide the method, and occasionally the honest answer is that a window or stair specialist is needed. We tell you that before quote stage, not on the day.

Do you move grand and baby grand pianos?

Yes. Grands travel with the legs and pedal lyre removed, the body padded and wrapped on its side on a piano shoe, and everything reassembled and positioned at the destination.

Will the piano need tuning after the move?

Probably, and that is normal. Moving and the change of room conditions affect tuning even on a perfectly handled move, so most owners book a tuner for a few weeks after settling in.

Can a piano be moved as part of a full house removal?

Yes, and it is cheaper that way than as two separate jobs. Mention the piano when you ask for your house removal quote so the right equipment is on the van.

How many people does it take to move a piano?

An upright is normally a two-person job with the right trolley and straps, and a grand or a tricky staircase often calls for more hands. We size the crew to the piano and the access rather than trying to muscle it with too few, which is the single most common cause of a damaged instrument and a damaged wall.
