Why student moves are different

A student move is small but unforgiving. The volume is one room: bedding, clothes, books, a desk setup and a kitchen box. The deadlines are not yours: halls and student landlords set hard checkout dates, deposits hang on leaving the room right, and everyone else in Selly Oak or Compton is moving the same week. Add the classic access problem (top-floor rooms, no lift, nowhere to park) and the family-car plan starts losing its shine around the second flight of stairs.

We run these as student moves: a right-sized van, a crew used to staircases, and a load that is secured properly rather than wedged under a parcel shelf. The monitor travels padded and upright, not under a duvet in a boot.

End of term without the meltdown

• Book the van before exams start. June and early July are the crunch; the firms that know student streets fill those weeks first. Term dates differ between Wolverhampton, Birmingham, Coventry and Stafford campuses, but the crunch is always the same fortnight either side of yours.
• Check your checkout requirements early. Halls publish what "left clean and empty" means; deposits die on the details. Photograph the empty room and the meter if you have one.
• Confirm parking at both ends. A campus permit or a bay booking at halls saves the crew a long carry, and a long carry is where the time goes on student jobs.
• Keep documents, laptop and chargers with you, not in the van. Exam-season equivalent of the essentials box in the moving house checklist.
• Label the boxes for the destination, even when the destination is your parents' garage. August-you will not remember which box holds the course notes.

Packing one room properly (it still counts)

Small move, same physics. The full method lives in the packing guide; the student-sized version is four rules. Books in small boxes only, because the HomeOwners Alliance's packing rule bites hardest on a paperback collection: "Don't pack heavy items into big boxes as you'll end up with something you cannot lift." Clothes travel in bags, which squash; bedding wraps the fragile stuff for free. The PC or console setup gets packed last and carried separately, cables bagged and labelled. And the kitchen box gets taped properly, because a box of shared-house crockery taped with optimism is how stairwells get decorated.

Summer storage between tenancies

The classic gap: tenancy ends in June, the new house starts in September, home is two hundred miles away. Hauling everything home and back costs two long trips; storage over the summer costs one short one. The load goes from your room into secure container storage near the M54, sealed until the September delivery to the new address. Vans, sharing and the student discount

Most student moves are man-and-van jobs: one vehicle, a two-person crew where stairs demand it, priced by the load and the distance rather than a house-move day rate. Sharing works brilliantly when housemates coordinate: one van, several rooms, the cost split between you, which is exactly how the man and van model is supposed to be used.
