Why everyone wants Friday (and what it costs them)

Friday's logic is obvious: complete, move, unpack over the weekend, back to work Monday. Solicitors like it, chains synchronise around it, and so a large share of the country tries to move on the same five or six Fridays around month-end. The HomeOwners Alliance flags it in its moving checklist: "Bear in mind moving house on a Friday, on a Bank Holiday weekend and in the school holidays is always busier."

Busier means three concrete things. Vans and crews sell out weeks earlier, so latecomers get whoever is left rather than whoever is good. There is no slack in anyone's diary, so a solicitor running late at 4pm on a Friday leaves you negotiating with a locked estate agent's office and a loaded van. And conveyancers are juggling their thickest completion pile of the month, which is exactly when delays breed. None of that makes Friday wrong; it makes Friday a premium product, paid for in choice and risk rather than just money.

The case for Tuesday and Wednesday

Midweek is the quiet end of the removals calendar, and quiet is worth having. The supposed downside, unpacking on work days, is smaller than it looks. Beds and the kitchen happen on day one regardless, and a Tuesday move means the boring admin (meter readings, broadband engineer, the first-week list) lands on weekdays when call centres actually answer. Take Friday when the chain demands it; pick midweek when anyone asks what you would prefer.

Month-ends, school holidays and the moving seasons

The same crowding logic repeats at larger scales. Month-end beats mid-month because mortgage offers, tenancy dates and payroll all gravitate there, so the last Friday of the month is the single most contested van slot in Britain. School holidays concentrate family moves, with late July and August the annual peak. Bank holiday weekends look clever and behave like double Fridays.

If your dates are genuinely free, mid-month and midweek in the colder half of the year is the calmest water in the whole calendar. If they are not free, none of this is a reason to panic; it is a reason to book earlier. When completion picks the day for you

Buyers and sellers often do not get a vote: the chain agrees a completion date and that is the day. The move still has options inside it. Packing can finish the day before, with the van loading first thing so the only thing waiting on the solicitors is the drive. Some moves split across two days, loading the day before completion and delivering the moment keys release, which turns a tight Friday into a calm one.
